About

A Little About Me

I'm Magdalen Radovich, a Hudson Valley writer, poet, photographer, and teacher. I live in Marlboro, New York, with my two Bengal cats, Pete and Charley, who are convinced that every desk, notebook, and freshly printed page belongs to them. I've been writing since I was ten, although I've come to it and back to it many times, including through thirty years in New York City public education.

The Work

Ever since I was a child, my favorite time to work has been in the dark hours, in that space just before dawn when memories refuse to stay quiet. My muse often drops fragments and sharp-edged pieces on my countertop, looking for a place to begin on a page or screen. Sometimes they're happy just to be acknowledged. Other times they become a poem, an essay, or an image wanting a voice in words.

I'm drawn to the details we almost miss, and to the moments that divide a life into before and after. Poetic Flotsam, my collection of photographs and poems from the last decade, is a work in progress, now in deep revision.

Community

Creative work may begin as a solo act, but it gains momentum and meaning through collaboration. I believe in the power of a room where people feel safe enough to try, stumble, laugh, and try again.

Creatyve PenCraft is that room. I host Coffee, Tea & Poetry, a monthly reading series at Fermata Café & Roastery in Marlboro, and I work with the Creative Writing Club at Marlboro High School.

You'll usually find me at the crossroads where life and art meet, coffee in hand, ready to talk with anyone about language, image, and the stories we shape from both.

What I Know

I don't have everything figured out. I'm not sure I trust anyone who does. I'm a mother and a grandmother, and I've learned some of what I know from watching the people I love become themselves.

What I know is that stories connect us. Laughter helps. Creativity matters. A photograph can hold what words cannot. And sometimes the best thing we can do is show up at the page and follow the story wherever it wants to go.
